Scholars and practitioners around the world use the word complex when they talk about things they cannot control or understand. At one level, this can be useful, but it can also be confusing.
What do they mean? How are they the same and different? What is true in any given situation? What is useful, to whom, and for what?
This paper looks at the container of complexity theory and practice, focusing in on differences that make a difference to articulate a map of the territory. The purpose is not to judge better or worse, but to set a context for useful dialogue exchange across those differences.
